A new twist on DNA extraction

DNA extraction—how can we make this activity even better? Challenge students to develop their own protocol for the procedure!

Feed the World educator Heather Bryan led a group of 14 science teachers through this lesson at the Science Education Council of Ohio’s 2023 Science Symposium. Participants were tasked with creating a protocol for extracting DNA from corn. They collaborated for the initial design, using resource cards showing the materials available and their properties. Some materials are decoys like baking soda and vinegar, while others are commonly found in DIY DNA extraction protocols.

Using their collective knowledge about cells and DNA, the teachers designed their own method to extract DNA from cells. After following their plan, they evaluated their results and discussed which protocol was the best design.
