How healthy is your soil?

The River View FFA learned about soil health and soil testing thanks to the donation of a soil test kit from the Ohio Corn Education program. Students were able to take soil samples from various crop fields. Next, they determined the pH, nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus levels in the soil and analyzed the results to see if fertilizer needed to be added. Students also discussed how soil testing was important in the 4 R stewardship practices of the right time, right place, right amount, and right product.

FFA advisor Allyssa McMullen said the group also promoted soil testing at a local Rural King store where students set up displays and gave demonstrations on how to collect a soil sample and how to use the Rapitest soil testing kit.
