Grant supplies allow sugar scrutiny

Another grant supply winner! Triway High School instructor Jennifer Farrar received a distillation kit from Ohio Corn & Wheat. Some of her college credit chemistry and biology students used the kit for concentration and solution separation. This was part of their efforts to measure the amount of sugar in regular Coke and Coke Zero. The students separated out the sugar and compared the amount to the soda with artificial sweetener. They also calculated the water content.

“I am going to include this in college credit biology next year for cellular respiration/fermentation with kombucha and with environmental science for ethanol production,” Farrar said.

It pays to attend Feed the World workshops! Alumni are eligible for special opportunities such as the grant program which provided distillation kits in the fall and a variety of other supplies this spring. Watch our events page for upcoming workshops.
