GMO controversy is an opportunity to engage students

Mexico has placed a ban on shipments of genetically-modified corn from the United States. The United States government is challenging that ban under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement which governs the terms of trade in North America.

The participating countries had agreed to base their regulation on scientific research. Mexico’s ban on genetically modified corn is being challenged as not conforming to that agreement.

Show your students the science behind genetically-modified corn with our Biotechnology lessons. Have you students read factual media coverage of the controversy and help them understand the challenges of producing enough food for a growing population with our Feeding the World lessons. Real-world science doesn’t get more relevant than this!
