Workshop and Grant Materials Provide Hands-on Learning
Laura Ringler teaches Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, Plant and Animal Science, Science and Technology of Food, and Mechanical Principles classes at Plymouth High School. She attended the 2015 Feed the World workshop and found it very helpful. Ringler said, “The workshop allowed me to network with other teachers from across the state in the area of agriculture and science. I was also able to gain materials I have used in the classroom this fall related to soil science, corn production and water quality.”
Ringler also received one of the mini-grants given to several FTW workshop participants. She used the grant to purchase supplies, allowing her class to:
- Learn topographical landforms and using a clinometer to measure slope and discuss its effect on our land from erosion to drainage
- Discuss soil color using a Munsell soil color book to distinguish the hue and chroma of the soil to determine areas with poor drainage and quality of organic matter content
- Use pure texture samples of sand, silt and clay to determine soil porosity and the effects of texture on the soil
- Use water quality testing supplies to determine field run-off
These materials allowed students to have more hands-on interactions with the world around them as they collected samples to determine soil and water qualities. “They appreciated being outside and out of their seats. Students were able to make meaningful "real-world" connections with their materials. On their testing, students received better scores than previous students due to hands-on labs associated with the content,” said Ringler.
